What's New on St. Simons This Summer: A Resident's Notebook of Second Acts and Sunday Nights

If you have lived on the island for more than a season, you already know the summer rhythm: the causeway backs up on Friday, the Pier Village parking lot fills by ten, and by August you are choosing between air conditioning and the beach. What you might not have caught, between the day job and the tide chart, is how much of the island's food and event calendar has quietly rearranged itself since spring.

This is not a visitor guide. It is a notebook for people who already live here, organized around one observation: the summer of 2026 on St. Simons is a season of second acts. Restaurants have moved floors. Storefronts have changed hands without changing names. Postell Park is doing the work of three venues. Here is what to circle before Labor Day.

The Ocean Lodge moved its dining room down two flights

The most consequential shift for anyone who has ever tried to book a birthday dinner with a view is at Ocean Lodge Resort. After more than a decade of hosting dining on The Rooftop, Ocean Lodge Resort on St. Simons Island has debuted The Rooftop Grounded, with the restaurant now on the 2nd floor in the resort's former lobby area. The fifth-floor space did not close. It remains as open bar only with sunset happy hour from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., and a new menu for the 5th floor Rooftop is in planning.

Two things are worth knowing before you make a reservation. The kitchen is under Chef Matt Schleis, recently appointed as the General Manager and Executive Chef, with over twenty years of experience blending traditional Southern cooking and contemporary technique. And the new room keeps a tight schedule: the 2nd floor Rooftop Grounded is an intimate fine dining space serving Wednesday through Saturday, 5pm to 9pm, with happy hour 5pm to 6pm. If you are used to walking in on a Tuesday for a sunset drink, you are now looking at the bar upstairs.

Redfern Village kept its wine shop and changed its owner

The kind of transition locals actually notice is the one where the sign stays and the person behind the counter is new. After 15 years in the St. Simons Island community, longtime Redfern Village favorite Wine Body & Soul is now under new ownership, with Sharon Otto and her team, Dani and Claire, thoughtfully building upon the charm guests have come to love.

For a village that turns over slowly, a decade-and-a-half handoff matters. If your Friday-evening wine run is a habit, this is the summer to reintroduce yourself.

A shared storefront at 1226 Ocean Blvd

Two small businesses have combined addresses in a way that changes how you plan a Saturday morning. Coastal Coffee and The Southern Peach Artisan Market have joined forces to create one community-driven space, inviting you to sip, shop, and support local under one roof at 1226 Ocean Blvd., Unit #2, on St. Simons Island.

This is the kind of consolidation that reads small on paper and large in practice. Coffee and a local-goods market at one door means one stop instead of two, which in July matters more than it sounds.

The Frederica Road wellness corner

Up on the north end of the island, near where the traffic thins and the canopy takes over, there is a new gathering place worth knowing. Located on the North End of St. Simons Island at 3803 Frederica Road, LIFT Café and Smoothie Bar is more than a coffee shop, described by the owners as a gathering place built around wellness, connection, and community.

If your morning loop runs from Sea Palms up past Frederica, LIFT sits neatly on the route. The address alone tells you the intent: this is not for the Pier Village walk-up crowd.

Postell Park is running three overlapping calendars

Here is the pattern that actually organizes summer weekends on the island: Postell Park, the live-oak-covered square at the heart of Pier Village, is hosting three separate recurring events, each with its own audience and its own set of dates. The park is not a venue anymore. It is a schedule.

Two things to notice. First, September is stacked: three consecutive weekends of programming in the same park. Second, Crafts in the Village runs 10am to 5pm Saturday and 10am to 4pm Sunday, rain or shine, and is free to attend. If you have out-of-town family arriving for Labor Day, the calendar is doing the entertainment work for you.

Sunday evenings at the Lighthouse

The Coastal Georgia Historical Society's summer concert series is the other calendar worth putting on the fridge. Since 1998, residents and visitors have gathered on the oceanfront lawn beneath the Lighthouse for the Society's summer concert series, with concerts running from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and picnic suppers and lawn chairs encouraged.

What remains on the 2026 schedule:

• July 19: Her Majesty's Request. The Atlanta-area band is known for high-energy performances of mega-hits spanning the British Invasion through Brit Pop, from Bowie and the Beatles to the Kinks, the Clash, Supergrass, Squeeze, and the Stones.
• September 6: The Sensational Sounds of Motown. The Little Light Music Concert Series wraps up with these perennial crowd-pleasers, 20+ year veterans of stages across the Southeast, playing Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, and Sly Stone.

Tickets are $20 for adults; children under 12 and Keepers of the Light are admitted free; cash will not be accepted at the gate the evening of the concerts, card only, and season passes are available for $60. The card-only policy is the detail newcomers miss. Bring the plastic.

A note on the same weekend: July 19 is a Sunday, and July 18–19 is also the St Simons Market weekend at Postell Park. If you plan the day right, that is a morning at the market, an afternoon nap, and a picnic on the lighthouse lawn before nine.

The October marker on Mallery Street

One more date belongs on the calendar even though it sits just past summer. This October marks the 1st anniversary of King City Kitchen and a big chapter in the history of 117 Mallery Street and owners Cat and Chris McDougald, with the restaurant serving as an homage to "Old St. Simons."

A first anniversary on Mallery Street is a real milestone in a village where turnover is common and the good rooms tend to become the anchor rooms. If you have not been in since it opened, October is the honest occasion.

The through-line

Look at the list together and a picture emerges that a visitor would not see. The island is not adding new venues so much as rearranging the ones it already has. Ocean Lodge dropped a floor. Wine Body & Soul kept the name and swapped the owner. Coastal Coffee and Southern Peach doubled up under a single Ocean Boulevard address. Postell Park absorbed the Saturday-Sunday economy of the entire village. The Lighthouse lawn is doing the concert programming that a purpose-built amphitheater would do elsewhere.

For residents, that has a practical consequence: your habits from two summers ago are probably out of date, and the best weekends this year are the ones where two of these calendars overlap. July 18 through 19, September 12 through 13, and Labor Day weekend into the Motown finale are the concentrated dates. Plan around those and the shoulder weekends take care of themselves.
